Role overview

The Texas A&M Sounding Rocketry Team is competing in IREC 2027 with a 30,000 ft apogee, student-built hybrid rocket. The Avionics Subteam is responsible for the electronics and embedded systems that enable the vehicle to sense, communicate, and record its state throughout flight. In this role, you will focus primarily on designing, prototyping, and testing custom PCBs and the electronics that make up the vehicle's avionics systems. You will work closely with other Avionics members to take hardware from initial design through bring-up, testing, and flight.

What we are looking for

Preferred Skills: Arduino or other microcontroller development Strong C or Python programming experience Experience prototyping, debugging, and solving problems. Familiarity with common embedded interfaces such as SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, or USB ____________________________________ Additional Skills: PCB design experience using KiCad, Altium, or similar EDA tools Breadboarding and rapid electronics prototyping Soldering, rework, and hands-on electronics assembly Familiarity with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters, or other debugging equipment You do not need to have experience with every skill listed above. Rocketry-specific hardware, tools, and systems are not expected, and learning new skills is an integral part of the role.

Project context

Avionics Hardware members develop the physical electronics that support sensing, flight computers, communications, data storage, and other vehicle systems. You will work across the full hardware lifecycle, from circuit and PCB design through prototyping, firmware bring-up, integration, and environmental testing. Your hardware and software will ultimately fly on the vehicle, making careful electrical design, debugging, and verification critical to the success of the mission.
