Role overview
The Texas A&M Sounding Rocketry Team is competing in IREC 2027 with a 30,000 ft apogee, student-built hybrid rocket. The Dynamics subteam is responsible for the external design of the vehicle to ensure the necessary performance is achieved. Understanding the behavior and stability of this vehicle requires accurate flight simulations that take into account all available information and uncertainties. You will work with other members (including some in other subteams) to co-develop a Monte Carlo flight simulation tool that will be used for preliminary design, performance optimization, and day-of-launch simulations of our rockets for years to come. (Note: Tasks assigned to this role serve as the primary focus area where a candidate can stand out most, though members will also contribute to other subteam tasks as needed.)
What we are looking for
Preferred skills (Note: These are preferred backgrounds, but on-the-job training and learning will be provided.) Basic Git and Linux experience Software project development experience Fundamental understanding of flight dynamics and the key forces acting on a rocket in flight
Project context
Developing useful simulation tools is necessary to unlock higher performance and characterization of the rockets we launch. By being involved in this new infrastructure, Dynamics members will get to drive preliminary design, performance optimization, and other kinds of analysis that we would otherwise be unable to reach using existing hobby-scale tools.
