Role overview
The Texas A&M Sounding Rocketry Team is competing in IREC 2027 with a 30,000 ft apogee, Student Researched and Developed (SRAD) hybrid rocket. The Recovery subteam is responsible for designing and implementing a recovery system to ensure the safe and reliable return of the vehicle following launch. In this role, you will contribute to the design and integration of the rocket’s parachute systems, recovery hardware, deployment mechanisms, ejection charges, and flight computers.
What we are looking for
Preferred Skills: Strong attention to detail Basic CAD experience (SolidWorks or similar) Familiarity with parachute systems Familiarity with commercially available flight computers such as the Blue Jay, Blue Raven, TeleGPS, Eggtimer systems, Jolly Logic Cable Cutters, Tender Descenders, and similar devices Familiarity with in flight recovery forces Comfort working around physical hardware _______________________ Additional Skills: (The following experience is beneficial but not required) HAM radio license L1 rocketry certification Hands on model rocketry experience Note: Applicants are not expected to possess all of the skills listed above. These qualifications are intended to provide examples of the experience and technical background that would be beneficial for the role. A willingness to learn, strong problem-solving skills, and an interest in recovery systems are equally valuable.
Project context
As a Recovery subteam member, you will contribute to the design and assembly of the rocket’s recovery system. Responsibilities will include parachute selection and sizing, recovery load calculations, ejection charge sizing, flight computer selection and integration, and recovery hardware. During the Fall semester, the primary focus will be developing and analyzing the recovery system while coordinating with other subteams to ensure compatibility with the overall vehicle design. During the Spring semester, the focus will shift toward fabrication, assembly, testing, and final integration of the recovery system for flight. Members will also have opportunities to pursue additional research and development projects related to recovery systems as time allows.
