Structures Subteam
Role overview
The Texas A&M Sounding Rocketry Team is competing in IREC 2027 with a 30,000 ft apogee SRAD hybrid rocket. The Structures subteam is responsible for manufacturing the physical airframe, including the body tubes, nosecone, fins, couplers, and other structural components, and ensuring everything is built to spec and integrates cleanly with the rest of the vehicle. This year we are putting a strong emphasis on manufacturing quality, structural analysis, and documentation. You will work directly alongside experienced members from day one and be expected to grow into a contributing engineer by the end of the year. Note: This role is simply the way the candidate can stand out. All Structures members contribute across design, analysis, and manufacturing throughout the year.
What we are looking for
Preferred Skills Basic CAD experience (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or similar) Familiarity with engineering fundamentals (statics, materials, basic mechanics) Any hands-on fabrication experience — shop class, personal projects, anything built with your hands Attention to detail and follow-through on tasks ______________________________________________ Additional Skills (helpful but not required) Experience with FEA or structural analysis tools Composite manufacturing experience Machining or metalworking background All technical skills specific to rocketry are taught on the job. We are looking for motivation and work ethic above all else.
Project context
As a Structures member you will contribute to CAD integration, structural analysis, and hands-on manufacturing of flight hardware across the full development cycle. In the fall you will focus on learning the vehicle architecture and supporting analysis work, and in the spring you will be directly involved in building and integrating the rocket. This role is ideal for someone who wants to understand how a rocket is physically built from the ground up and is willing to put in the hours to make that happen.
